Microlearning and Fluid Boxes

The more courses I create, the more I am intrigued by Microlearning. I have really come to realize the smaller form factors of smart phones and diminishing attention span of people provides a whole new opportunity for custom design and instructional modes that may have a more relevant impact. One instructional style does not work for all people or output devices and I think we are at the beginning of an important new instructional technique.

Microlearning is creating short learning objects that are stand-alone or can be combined to give a more fulsome understanding of the training. These lessons can be conveyed by graphics and text, video, podcasts, motion graphics or any combination of them all. The key is “short, bite size” learning objects, usually between 90 seconds and 3 minutes.   While not exclusively the domain of mobile devices, micro lessons are ideal for this device since they are lightweight, and the student always has the “classroom” with them.

This is where I think the new Fluid Boxes will play an important part moving forward. I really like the way they keep each learning object, separate but orderly, also their ability to scale multiple devices, seamlessly are awesome. I’m looking forward to playing with complimentary learning objects on the same slide and seeing how they work, if timed properly, on target devices.

I am planning on creating a dedicated micro learning module in the next couple of months. I will let you know how it goes.

Responsive course design with Adobe Captivate 2017

As I have worked with Adobe Captivate to develop online learning modules I am very excited to see how easy it has become to create responsive courses. Whereas previous versions of Captivate made it very time-consuming to achieve accurate designs for the whole range of screen sizes, the new version has considerably improved. From a project management point of view, the new version with its new fluid box feature not only shortens the production time immensely, the improved workflow also guarantees a high quality of responsive course designs which contributes to better and more user friendly products – and students with more positive learning experiences. Showing Some Love For Captivate

I started my career back in July 2015 when I had no experience of developing elearning content, and had never heard of Adobe Captivate before.

At first I was in a state of panic, as the word developer filled my stomach with dread, as I can’t code to save my life. But I wasn’t to worry.

After learning on the job and also with the help of the internet e.g. Paul Wilson’s videos , I’m now more confident than ever with the software. With the tight deadlines I have at work, Captivate makes it easy to accomplish them and I don’t spend forever searching for the tools I need.

With the new 2017 release, things have just got a whole lot better. I’ve been testing it by simulating the type of work I do and one new feature I really love is the ability to change Advanced Actions from normal to conditional, this will save me hours. If only I’d had this before. I’m also loving the fluid boxes.

I can’t wait to get to know the 2017 edition even more and to see how else it will streamline my development.
